Diablo was inspired by Mt. Diablo, also known as "The Devil's Thicket,” located in the East Bay Area of San Francisco. This composition evokes the dark, sinister feeling that surrounds Mt. Diablo. To achieve this feeling, the composition is written in A minor. The piece begins with the thunderous sounds of agitato drumming, followed by the rhythmic melody of demonic mischief represented by keyboard percussion. The piece then gradually builds in intensity, culminating in allegro con fuoco toward the end, evoking images of fire and brimstone.
