‘Crossfire 3’ is a direct transcription from ‘Crossfire 2’, and works just as well in the duet format as the ensemble piece. ‘Crossfire 3’ bursts into life from bar 2, and doesn’t relent in pace at any point after that. Scored for snare drum, floor tom tom and two cymbals, the music exhibits piercing ricochet notes between the two players, and then moves into a smooth ‘funky-feel’ section where the duo trade four bar solos that feature stick clicks, cross sticks, rims and rim shots. Finally material from earlier in the work is retrieved so that the piece can finish with a big flourish on the two cymbals. Created from just crotchets, quavers and semiquavers, ‘Crossfire 3’ is very easy to learn and so would be an excellent first concert performance piece for a percussion duo.
